valoch - optical book – amodulo, 1970
/3
offset print
20 × 20 cm
Amodulo edition, 1000
cover and 24 pages
This artist’s book arose based on the works in which Jiří Valoch, by hand or using a typewriter, created a vertical line—either in the center of the page or on its left or right side—that created separate areas of paper. The placement of the line is, however, rhythmically varied page by page, thereby affording a new optical experience as one leafs through the book. Most of these artist’s books were created during the years of 1968 and 1969 and existed merely in the form of a few original editions done on A6-format handmade paper sent by the artist to a close-knit group of artist friends associated with the Poesia Visiva movement or with specific poems. The original artist’s books from this era make a theme of the term “a book,” of the process of leafing through a book, and/or of the way in which the individual pages are numbered. One of these artist’s books was published in 1970 as part of the Italian edition “Amodulo,” which Valoch followed quite intensely over a prolonged period as an important source of information about specific poetry and minimalist art.
