Marcus Geiger

Performance for The Bees, 2024

For ERSTE Foundation's "Bee Day 2024" in Vienna, Marcus Geiger created a spatial situation whose artistic concept referred to Bernard Mandeville's "The Fable of the Bees" (1714). The Grand Hall of Erste Campus, where the event took place, was transformed by the artist through various simple interventions such as the use of adhesive tape, labeled paper, and animations with words from the text. To create a connection between the interior and exterior spaces, Geiger developed a subtle performance on the skylight of the Grand Hall. During the event, cleaning staff from the Erste Campus scrubbed the roof windows. The enclosed interior, accessible only to exclusive guests and home to sophisticated theoretical discussions, was thus connected to the surrounding reality and simple, everyday activities such as cleaning.
