Agnieszka Brzeżańska
Paris, 2001
Paris is Agnieszka Brzeżańska's first film work. The title of the film was taken from the name of the perfume Paris, advertised in a women's magazine. The artist recorded a play with a photograph of a half-naked model with a hole cut in her forehead. The hole acts as a peephole to filter the sun's rays in the form of a narrow beam of light. The film begins with a close-up of the light source, which makes one feel as if one is watching a sunset. The modified photograph resembles a spontaneously made toy to kill boredom. Brzeżańska's love for observing nature is also revealed here: filming through a hole in the photograph is close to the ingenuity typical of amateur devices used to study natural phenomena.
